CHAPTER 14

UNAFRAID

Yanna couldn’t believe what she was hearing. The dragon staring intently down at her with his wide amber eyes had announced it certainly, like he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that what he said was true; Yanna was going to be his rider.

But he was wrong.

“I don’t know what makes you think so,” Yanna told him, still tense and frustrated as she skirted around the beast to continue on her way to the student building—only for the dragon to follow her, striding along as his talons clacked against the stone. “But no. I’m not going to be anyone’s rider, so please stop bothering me about it.”

“Bothering you?” the dragon repeated, pulling his large head back as if surprised and letting out a snorting breath from his snout. “I’m not bothering you. I’m scouting you!”

“No, you’re definitely bothering me,” Yanna said, her irritation spiking and drowning out the remaining fear she’d felt at his appearance. “Just because you call it something else doesn’t mean I’m not bothered. I want you to leave me alone, okay?”

“Bothered?” the dragon muttered, narrowing his eyes and tilting his head again as he continued crawling along beside her. “I had not…realized that my attentions would be of annoyance to you. I had rather expected you would be flattered.”

“What?” Yanna asked in disbelief, stopping in her walk and looking at him more fully. “Why would I be flattered to have some random dragon stalking me, and jumping down out of nowhere to block me from going to my room?”

“Well, I’m hardly a random dragon, am I?” the beast huffed. “I’m Phaedron. Have you not heard of me? I’ve been waiting to find a rider worthy of my efforts for two hundred years, and now I have chosen you. Is that not flattering?”

“Not when I’ve already said I don’t want to be a dragon rider,” Yanna told him. What was so hard for him to understand about that? “I don’t care what your name is or how long you’ve been waiting. It’s not flattering to have somebody ignore what you say and tell you that you’re going to do what they want, whether or not you want the same thing.”

“But why would you not wish to become a dragon rider?” Phaedron asked, letting out a light snort and tossing his scaly head back again. “Surely, someone with your impressive qualities has ambition, no? A drive to excel, a need to prove that you have what it takes to reach heights unimaginable?”

Yanna was staring again, surprise going through her at the remarks. She was too tired to deal with this right now. “What are you talking about?” she asked. “What ‘impressive qualities?’”

“Did you not see me up above? I watched your fight. For a girl who hails from Earth, you’re surprisingly competent in combat. But, you are full of surprises; I can tell.”

Yanna tensed, her thoughts once more traveling to her Witch Hunter tattoo. If he pried into her ‘surprises,’ she’d be in trouble. Whether he
